So many umbrellas, so little rain...

So as you can see from this picture on my campus, Chinese girls do not like catching a tan. On this very sunny day (or as sunny as it can be here, considering the pollution), most girls carry an umbrella. When I asked one of my new Chinese male friends whether the boys also use umbrellas, he laughed at me and said of course not, the boys are manly, instead of umbrellas they get skin nourishing and pore cleansing lotion for their face to keep their faces nice and smooth in the sun...

Man the money situation sounds very confusing. When does school start for you?

Well, lotion and moisturizers are a little different from the leather-skinned coonskin-cap wearing image I conjure up when I hear "manly," but the umbrellas are pretty cool!

Maybe with the pollution skin wouldn't turn into leather so much as just fall off anyhow.

How is the weather in general? Hot/cold/hurricanes like the ones that are bum-rushing the states at the moment?

Regarding school...I've already been teaching since Tuesday, and I am enjoying it a lot. Will post more about that soon.

Regarding the weather...I have not heard of any crazy stuff like hurricanes and tornadoes. It is extremely humid many days here, seems like it's 200% humidity, b/c I know I've been in 95% humidity and I get at least twice as sweaty here in the first 2 minutes of walking outside on a humid day. It's between 80-95% in the summer, and 4 distinct seasons, but during the winter it rarely snows and usually stays right above freezing; however, there is no heat at all and the buildings are poorly insulated, so from what I hear, apparently I will need to teach in a big coat while wearing a hat and gloves once it's winter time.

whats good, Professore?
did you manage to research the local computer card / chipset manufacturers?

Zhe--well such research is not easy to do because of the language barrier; however, another foreign teacher in the city has been in China for a year already and is looking into the matter. He actually used to be in the business of manufacturing the Zelenui brand CGA card in the USA and he is confident he should locate a couple of cards we can install on our laptops by next week.

Ha. You know your enthusiasm for computers always makes me laugh. Always interesting to hear about your vigilant search for hardware though. You know if I ever went to China I would probably be looking for other components that are harder to find in good condition in the U.S. Have you looked into any Old Processors installed on Unix Machines?

Atterosepes--can you give me some indication on who you are. Hehe, for a moment I thought you were some confused new reader...but now I see what you mean...yes Old Processors installed on Unix Machines are traditionally found in this neck of the woods, but is not something that has interested me as much. I am still looking for the cga computer card, which is hard to find b/c many Chinese view it the same as if you are looking to be a Hero trying to get In-to a villain's lair...
